A Celtic kitchen party with toe-tapping music, dancing and singing takes place Saturday at St. Mary’s Church Hall in Gibsons. Proceeds go towards the Coast String Fiddlers’ trip to Scotland for the Aberdeen International Youth Festival.

Also this Saturday, Pender Harbour Blues Society presents Pardi Hardi at Mardi Gras at the Roberts Creek Hall with Gary Comeau and the Voodoo All Stars. Film night

Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame is the title of a film from Afghanistan presented by the SC Film Society (SCFS) on Monday, Feb. 22, and screened in Persian with English subtitles.

Amidst the wreckage of a ruined statue of the Buddha, thousands of families struggle to survive. Baktay, a six-year-old Afghan girl, is challenged to go to school by her neighbour’s son, who reads in front of their cave. On her way, she is harassed by boys playing games that mimic the terrible violence they have witnessed. This film won the Special Peace Award, Berlin Film Festival, 2008 and Special Jury Prize, International Film Festival, Morocco, 2008.

It screens at Gibsons’ Heritage Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 season members, $8 single event. The SCFS annual general meeting follows the film.

Jazz à la Tech

On Thursday, Feb. 25, the Jordao PhotoGraphic Studio Gallery in Gibsons invites you to Jazz à la Tech — jazz standards with a digital twist featuring JJ Wagler on keys and guitar, JoMega on vocals, Paul Steenhuis on bass and Mystery Guest on drums. Proceeds from this event will go towards the promotion and support of artists and performers as well as continued improvements to the gallery. Photographs from Raquel Fors’ exhibit will be for sale. CD launch

For the past few months, singer-songwriter Skye Wallace has been working on her new EP, titled Amuse-Bouche. Produced by the Coast’s own Strait Sound Studios and featuring Joe Stanton and Susann Richter, Wallace has finally brought a taste of her own unique style to life. Amuse-Bouche EP Release - Coast Edition is at the Wild Bistro on Friday, Feb. 26. Show starts at 7 p.m.

Coffeehouse

This month’s Artesia Coffeehouse is on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7.

The evening will include Back Porch Reunion, a father/daughter duo of Rosalee and Dale Stavroff, guitar, fiddle and vocals of good ol’ feel good music. Another duo of John Marian and Sean Murphy will also play and sing their originals and more followed by songstress Tone Indbryn.

More newcomers to the Artesia stage will be Jenny Groves, acoustic bass, Fabrizio Alberico, guitar/banjo, and Ian McLatchie on steel guitar of Small Wonder, a group not to be missed. Enjoy the slideshow of performers, the delicious treats by Trish, the visuals of the current Life Drawing show, and visit with friends. Tickets are a sliding scale $8 to $10 at the door.

Writing & NIA
